Miranda Kerr is a top model and wife of Orlando Bloom who has caused a media frenzy this week by releasing a photograph of her breastfeeding their little boy Flynn.

Miranda posted a great response to the somewhat mixed reaction that the picture provoked saying:

"I personally wanted to thank you for all your beautiful and heartfelt comments.  We shared the first photo of Flynn with you because we wanted you guys to be the first to see him…. the photo was one of the first photos Orlando took. We both loved it and we wanted to share it.  The pleasant surprise was that it also had the added benefit of promoting breast-feeding which to me is the most natural thing in the world and I love it and the bonding time we have during these precious and beautiful moments. However, we all have a choice and having done my own research I decided that the best thing for Flynn was for me to breast feed him…. In saying that, everyone has a right to choose what they feel is best for their own baby and some people cannot breast-feed and/or do not want to and I totally respect that each person has that right to choose.  My recommendation is to make an informed choice and choose to breast feed or not based on the research you do as to whether or not it is beneficial to your baby and to you.  Don’t abandon breast feeding because of any “social” stigma (perceived or real) that might be attached to breast feeding in public.

Honestly,  I for one can say there are more breasts being shown on a daily basis around the world in swimwear and low-cut dresses and tops than there are from breast-feeding mums ;-)

I intend to breast feed for as long as I can.  My breast milk will give our little Flynn the nutrition he needs for his continued healthy development and to all mum’s out there I am sure you will make the right choice for you and your baby."

GO MIRANDA!!

Baby BuBu have been a big fan of these gorgeous breastfeeding pillows from the very start. Here is what independent midwife, Tina Perridge has to say:

“As a midwife specialising in postnatal care I have seen a wide variety of breastfeeding cushions in use. The Thrupennybits cushion is the only one I ever recommend. It is lightweight and portable, easy and comfortable to use and holds the baby at the ideal position enabling good latching and positioning which are so vital in achieving a good breastfeeding experience. Add to that the lovely colours and fabrics and excellent service. A real winner”

Breastfeeding at Work Proposal PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 29 November 2010 10:38

Companies should help new mothers to return to work by providing them with breastfeeding facilities or by allowing them to bring their babies to work, the Health Secretary, Andrew Lansley, said at the weekend. He is urging firms to set up areas where they can breastfeed and to supply fridges or cool-boxes to store expressed milk.

However, a public health White Paper this week will stop short of ordering companies to take such a step. Bosses are to be urged to be flexible over when mothers can take breaks. The proposals would also allow women to go home during the day to breastfeed.

We feel that this government proposal can  be a good thing for new mums, their babies and the organisations they work for. Women will feel empowered to go back to work, their babies will benefit from being breastfed for longer and organisations will benefit long term by nurturing staff relationships. As a society we stigmatise breastfeeding mums and it was only very recently that it became illegal to ask a women to stop breastfeeding in public. Giving breastfeeding women more options and more opportunity to live a full active life should definitely be encouraged. Although I do feel that the practicalities would need some working out and the effectiveness of this scheme would depend on the individual and the job that they do.
